Boyden’s Leadership Series Features Institute Of Directors’ Roger Barker
Global executive search organization Boyden has released a new issue of its Leadership Series, featuring an interview with Dr Roger Barker, Director of Corporate Governance and Professional Standards at the Institute of Directors (IoD).
The edition also includes a sidebar discussion with Sabine Brunthaler, a Partner of Boyden Switzerland, on the recruitment of board directors.
In the interview, Dr Barker discusses changing company cultures, education of non-executive directors, the danger of delegating risk management, progress in increasing the number of women on boards and best approaches to talent acquisition.
“Roger provides outstanding insight on the direction of corporate governance and regulation,” said Trina Gordon, President and CEO of Boyden World Corporation. “He offers details on the board setting the tone for the right corporate culture and the importance of shared values across the organisation.”
“Today, the track record of board members will most often forecast the quality of a company’s overall governance and management,” commented Ms Brunthaler. “In Roger’s interview and in our practice at Boyden, we’re finding that companies are much better suited with board placement by ensuring balanced skill sets and diverse experiences instead of selecting only well-known CEOs.”
At IoD, Dr Barker’s oversight includes corporate governance, board effectiveness, risk management, company law and corporate responsibility. He also has overall responsibility for the organization’s Learning and Development activities, Chartered Director and International Partnerships.
Apart from his role at IoD, Dr Barker is Senior Advisor to the Board of the European Confederation of Directors’ Association (ecoDa) and Chairman of the ecoDa Education Committee. He sits on advisory boards at other organizations, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and is a visiting lecturer at Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, ESSEC Business School in Paris, University College London, and the UK Ministry of Defence.
Dr Barker is the author of Corporate Governance, Competition, and Political Parties: Explaining Corporate Governance Change in Europe, published by Oxford University Press, and co-author (with Dr Neville Bain) of IoD’s main guide to the role of the board “The Effective Board: Building Individual and Board Success.”
